Wild Card - pandering pandemic pandemonium
Well we are all stuck inside, for the introverts great, for everyone else not so much. So what are we all doing? Probably consuming way more T.V. and video games than is probably good for us, or in the case of my wife and I bought many movies via VOD(video on demand such as VUDU). What are most of us seeing though? Ads. Ads from all sorts of brands spanning the entire spectrum of goods and services. If you see them on facebook, tiktok, instagram, and even twitter. All these brands are fighting for our attention, trying to get us to think they are the white knight of the Covid 19 crisis championing the cause. Companies switching production in their facilities to make face masks or other goods and services that are in short supply. Companies like Burger King reminding us that they can become a "Burger King Couch Potatriot", whatever that means, because BK offers delivery, through door dash. Dominoes and Papa Johns tells us that their pizza oven is hot enough to kill germs. Are these companies really trying to help people or are these just weird publicity stunts? People are sick and dying but at least you can get a flame broiled whopper delivered. I mean i get it these companies are trying to stay a float in these turbulent times but lets be honest whoppers and pizza are really the least of our concerns. this quote from the Atlantic describes it best "Restaurant Brands International, which owns Burger King, Popeyes, and Tim Hortons, shut down all its offices in the country and threw out its existing advertising plans. Its new ads spotlight low-contact payment and the plan to scoot bags of food out the drive-through window on a tray. If the company’s restaurants were going to pay employees and order supplies, it wanted people to know they could still come buy food. At Domino’s, the situation was similar, according to Kate Trumbull, a vice president of advertising at the company. The pizza giant scrapped an ad campaign that showed customers standing close to one another, rolled out information about its hands-free food-packaging practices, and repurposed a Risky Business–themed ad to address social distancing. (Sliding around at home in your socks and underwear is all too relevant to many viewers now.)" While id like to say i didnt try the slide in a pink shirt and briefs but my wife said no. Now delivery services are not uncommon with the growth of services such as Door Dash, Ubereats, Postmates, and so on, this is much easier than before for chain restaurants. The Long and the short of it is that almost every one at this point has a "we're doing something" Ad. like this ad from Ikea about staying at home. Look i enjoy putting together weirdly names furniture as much as the next guy but is this really the time to remind us? Lets talk about some more wholesome content. Like this video from hyundai telling s that if we buy a car now they will cover payments for 6 months if you lose your job during the quarantine, and that a great thing for families that can afford to buy a car at the moment. Frito-lay has had a great campaign talking about how this isnt about the brands or the company but about helping people and never show their logo just a link to a website telling how they are helping and how you can help. Is this all pandering or is this just adjustment to the current global climate? id say its a bit of both.
